It is neither a house nor is it in Slough but as the joke about the etymology of the name goes a discussion and gossip between spies that runs. Theyre the services poor relations the slow horses and bitterest among them is River Cartwright whose days are spent transcribing mobile phone conversations.

The book starts slowly.
